Arthur started working in a bicycle factory at the age of fifteen. Don’t worry, he can read and write and he’s in a good health. He reads the newspaper everyday and is able to read people’s mind as well. But something’s wrong with him. Which category (See Merton’s typology about deviance) do you think Arthur fits into from a sociological perspective on deviance? As far as I am concerned, I’ve found it very difficult to categorize him. He accepts some institutionalized means and cultural goals and he sometimes doesn’t. He complains about taxes and insurance and puts the blame on the members of the society, when something goes wrong, as young people do most of the time.

“Mrs Bull had been continually gossiping about Arthur carrying on with married women, and both Fred and Arthur considered this an unforgivable sin because she happened to be right. Arthur felt she was ruining his reputation apart from risking his neck, resenting her stares as he walked down and up the yard, and her half-muttered words of disgust that branded him a dirty old man”. Page 122.
But neither Brenda nor Winnie, the soldier’s wife, obey by social norms by cheating on their husbands. Both are unfaithful women.
What will become of Arthur, the rebel, who lacks maturity? Will he be able to carry on like this forever? Will Doreen change the course of his life?
Arthur is the main character of a very captivating novel by the British novelist Alan SILLITOE.
The novel has its setting in Nottingham after Second World War.

فهو يقبل بعض الوسائل المؤسسية الجاري بها العمل والأهداف الثقافية والاجتماعية ويرفضها في بعض الأحيان. يشكو من الضرائب والتأمين ويلقي بالعديد من الاخطاء على عاتق أفراد المجتمع وذلك في معظم الاحيان من شأن الشباب.
لكن آرثر يعرف جيدًا أنه لا يستطيع أن يفلت من الرقابة الاجتماعية التي عبر آليتها التي تدفع به الى الالتزام بالمعايير الاجتماعية وبالتالي وضع حد لما يُنظر إليه على أنه سلوك منحرف.
« كانت السيدة بول (Bull) تثرثر باستمرار حول استمرار آرثر مع النساء المتزوجات ، واعتبر كل من فريد (Fred) وأرثر أن هذه خطيئة لا تغتفر لأنها تصادف أنها كانت على حق. شعر آرثر بأنها كانت تدمر سمعته بصرف النظر عن المخاطرة برقبته ، واستاء من نظراتها وهو يمشي صعودًا ونزولًا في الفناء ، وكلماتها شبه الغاضبة من الاشمئزاز التي وصفته بأنه رجل عجوز قذر ». الصفحة 122.
ولكن لا بريندا ولا ويني، زوجة الجندي، تخضعان للأعراف الاجتماعية من خلال الغش على أزواجهن. كلاهما من النساء الخائنات لأزواجهن مع نفس العشيق أي آرثر.
كيف سيكون مصير آرثر المتمرد الذي يفتقر إلى النضج؟ هل هو قادر على الاستمرار هكذا إلى الأبد؟ هل ستأثر دورين (Doreen) عن مسار حياته؟
آرثر هو الشخصية الرئيسية لرواية آسرة للغاية للروائي البريطاني ألان سيليتوي, Alan SILLITOE (1928-2010)
تدور أحداث الرواية في نوتنغهام (Nottingham) بعد نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية.
