لم يسعني إلا أن قرأت مرتين عن الفئران والرجال لجون شتاينبك. في هذا المقال ، أقدم ملخصا وبعض الملاحظات بالإضافة إلى بعض الموارد. أنا مسؤول مسؤولية كاملة عن أي خطأ أو سوء تفسير.

أين تدور أحداث قصة الرجال والفئران بقلم جون شتاينبك أو ستاينبك (1902-1968) ومن هي الشخصيات الرئيسية في الرواية؟
الشخصيات الرئيسية في الرواية
دجورج ميلتون رفيق ليني في السفر و المسؤول عن توجيهه وحمايته، ليني سمول شاب عملاق يتمتع ببنية قوية ولكنه معاق عقليا، كيرلي مالك المزرعة وإبنه وزوجته، كروك الرجل الأسود من اصول افريقية، كاندي الرجل المسن صاحب الكلب المسن. سليم وكارلسن العاملين الاخيرين.
ما يشكل خلفية الرواية
تدور أحداث معظم قصة « الفئران والرجال » في مزرعة في سوليداد بولاية كاليفورنيا. تقع سوليداد في قلب وادي ساليناس ، وهي واحدة من أكثر المناطق إنتاجية في ولاية كاليفورنيا من مجال الزراعة. وكان العمال يلجأون الى المزارع حيث يعملون انذاك بصفة مؤقتة.
يصف المؤلف كيف أن رجلين يحمل كلاهما قبعة، أحدهما أطول وأقوى من الآخر ، وصلا إلى مكان يعرفانه على ما يبدو. يصف الطريقة التي يتمشى بها ليني : ” يمشى بكثافة ، يجر قدميه قليلا ، بالطريقة التي يجر بها الدب بيادقه.“صفحة 4. وكانت الشمس تهبط في الأفق. لقد استقرا على ضفة النهر بالقرب من بركة قضيا فيها الليل. المكان ليس بعيدا عن تل مشجر. يجب أن يذهبا في الصباح إلى مزرعة حيث من المفترض أن يمارسا عملا هناك.
يعاني ليني من صعوبة في التذكر. يتذكر فقط الأرانب (مهووس بالأرانب) الشيئ الذي يثير جنون واغتياظ رفيقه دجورج . يدرك القارئ مدى صعوبة مهمة دجورج والمسؤولية التي تقع على عاتقه تجاه رفيقه.
الوصول الى المزرعة
وصلا الى المزرعة واستقبلهما كاندي، الرجل المسن الدي يعمل كمساعد و أراهما أسرتهما في المهجع في المبنى المستطيل الشكل والذي يحتوي على ثمانية أسرة. ويسكن كروك غرفته المليئة بالكتب بمفرده بعيدا عن المبنى. الشيئ الذي يتعارض مع الصور النمطية عن العمال من أصل أفريقي بشأن الثقافة.
يدافع عن رفيقه
دخل صاحب المزرعة المبنى ليتعرف على العاملين الجديدين واستغرب اجوبة دجورج نيابة عم ليني. وليكن في علم القارئ بأن دجورج نصح ليني عدة مرات بعدم ارتكاب أي فعل سيئ وكذلك بعدم التحدث الى الناس إلا إذا سمح له بذلك.
أشاد جورج بقدرات ليني على العمل حتى لو كان متخلفا عقليا. وظن صاحب المزرعة ان دجورج يريد ان يستحوذ على أجره. وقال دجورج ان ليني ابن عمته وانه ركله حصان في رأسه عندما كان طفلا. لم يدرك ليني أن دجورج قد كذب بشأن هويته. واعطى كيرلي أوامره ونظر لفترة طويلة إلى الرجلين ثم غادر المكان.
ابن مالك المزرعة
كرر جورج بشدة تحذيراته لرفيقه بشأن ضرورة عدم الاستجابة عند ما يتحدث إليه الناس.
وجاء شاب الى المهجع حيث يوجد دجورج وليني.
شاب نحيف ذو وجه بني ، عيناه بنيتان وشعره مجعد بإحكام يبحث عن أبيه، مالك المزرعة. وأخبره كاندي. مرت عيناه على الرجلين وتوقفا. ووجه نظرة تتسم بالبرودة إلى جورج ثم إلى ليني. وشعر ليني بعدم الارتياح بسبب نظرة كيرلي المشاكسة والذي اقترب بحذر شديد. وأجاب دجورج عن السؤال الموجه الى ليني رغم إلحاح كيرلي الذي نصح دجورج بالاهتمام بشؤونه الخاصة. وبهذه الطريقة استطاع كيرلي التعرف جزئيا على الرفيقين العاملين. لا يسع المرء إلا أن يشعر بالقلق بشأن ما هو محتوم.
رجال ونساء
يمكننا أن نستنتج من الحوار الذي دار بين كاندي ودجورج ان كيرلي ملاكم وزن الريشة، يكره الرجال الكبار. إنه دائما ما يثير المعارك أو المشاجرات مع الكبار . إنه غاضب منهم. من الأفضل أن يحترس من ليني. ليني ليس بملاكم ولكنه قوي وسريع ولا يعرف القواعد. ونعلم كذلك ان غرور كيرلي ازداد منذ ان تزوج وان زوجته تنظر الى سليم وكارلسن بإغراء دون ان يعلم بذلك زوجها. يظن كاندي ان كيرلي الابن تزوج منذ اسبوعين امرأة لا تليق به. (وصفها بالمومس)
وحذر دجورج أن كيرلي ينوي تسديد لكمات الى ليني اذا سنحت الفرصة. وبدا الفزع في عيني ليني. « إذا تشابك معك ، ليني ، فسوف يتم طردنا. لا تخطئ في ذلك. إنه نجل رب العمل. (…) لا تتحدث معه أبدا. » صفحة 31.
ونظر ليني الى رفيقه الذي يعتمد عليه والمسؤول عن حمايته نظرة تشي بحيرة وتوثر فطمأنه دجورج.
زوجة الشاب كيرلي
يبدو أن زوجة كيرلي تحب الظهور وتحاول جذب انتباه العمال والتحدث اليهم. وهم يحاولون تجنب الحديث إليها خشية أن يجر عليهم ذلك مشاكل بسبب زوجها. واعين بضرورة عدم التصرف بطيش أو العبث معها.
توجهت انظار الرجال الى زوجة كيرلي التي ادعت انها تبحث عنه.
ويصف الروائي زوجة كيرلي : « كانت شفاهها ممتلئة وعيناها متباعدتان وقد اتستخدمت الماكياج بشكل مفرط. (…) شعرها معلّق في مجموعات صغيرة ملفوفة (…) كانت ترتدي ثوبا قطنيا وميول حمراء ». صفحة 32.
لا نعرف الدوافع
يعتمد الأفراد أحيانا سلوكيات تبدو غريبة بالنسبة لنا مسبقا لأننا لا نعرف دوافعهم. ومن ثم فإن بعض حالات سوء الفهم يمكن أن تؤدي إلى عواقب غير مرغوب فيها بل و مأساوية بعض الاحيان. سيدرك القارئ معنى هذه الملاحظة واهميتها عندما نتطرق الى ما حدث لزوجة كيرلي.

What is the background of the novel?
Most of the « Mice and Men » story takes place on a farm in Soledad, which is located in the heart of the Salinas Valley. It’s known that Soledad is one of California’s most productive areas of farming. The workers resorted to the farms, where most of them take temporary jobs back then.
They settled on a river bank
The author describes how two men, both wearing a hat, one taller and stronger than the other, arrived at a place they seem to know. He describes the way Lennie walks: “and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his pawns.” Page 4. The sun was setting. They settled on a river bank near a pool where they spent the night. The place is not far from a wooded hill. In the morning they should go to a farm where they are supposed to work.
Obsessed with rabbits
Lennie has trouble remembering. He only remembers rabbits (obsessed with rabbits), the thing that makes his companion, George, mad and angry. The reader realizes how difficult George’s task is and the responsibility he has to his comrade.
Arriving at the farm
They arrived at the farm and were met by Candy, the old man who works as an aide and who showed them their beds in the dormitory in the eight-bed rectangular building. Krook lives alone in his room full of books, contrary to stereotypes about workers of African origin and culture, away from the building.
Defending his mate
The farm owner entered the building to meet the new workers and was surprised by George’s answers on behalf of Lennie. Let the reader know that George advised Lennie several times not to do anything bad and not to talk to people unless he was allowed to do so.
George praised Lennie ‘s ability to work even if he was mentally retarded. The farm owner thought that George wanted to get his wages. George said Lennie was his cousin and that he was kicked in the head by a horse when he was a child. Lennie did not realize that George had lied about that. Curley gave his orders and looked for a long time at the two men and then left.
The boss’s son
George vigorously repeated his warnings to his companion that he should not respond when people were talking to him.
And a young man came to the dormitory where George and Lennie were.
A thin young man with a brown face, brown eyes and tightly curly hair, was looking for his father, the farm owner. Candy told him. His eyes passed over the two men and they stopped. He cast a cold look at George and then at Lennie. Lennie was uncomfortable with Curley’s feisty look, who approached very cautiously. And George answered the question put to Lennie, despite the insistence of Curley, who advised George to take care of his own affairs. In this way, Curley was able to partly get to know the two working comrades. One cannot help but be concerned about is bound to happen.
Of men and women
We can infer from the conversation between Candy and George that Curley, a lighrweight boxer, hates big men. He always provokes fights or quarrels with big guys. He is angry with them. Better watch out for Lennie. Lennie is not a boxer but he’s strong, fast and doesn’t know the rules. We also know that Curley’s arrogance has increased since he married and that his wife looks at Slim and Carlson seductively without her husband knowing about it (give someone the eye in informal language). Candy thinks that Curley Jr. got married two weeks ago to a woman who doesn’t fit him (portrayed as a “tart” by Candy)
George warned that Curley intends to punch Lennie if the opportunity arises. Dread appeared in Lennie’s eyes. “If he tangles with you, Lennie, we will be fired (get the can in slang). Make no mistake about it. He is the son of the boss. (…) Never talk to him.” page 31.
And Lennie looked at his companion, the man he depends upon and who is responsible for protecting him, a look of confusion and tension, but George reassured him.
Curley’s wife
It seems that Curley’s wife likes to show off and is trying to get the workers’ attention and talk to them. They try to avoid talking to her for fear that this will get them in trouble because of her husband. They are conscious of the need not to act recklessly or mess with it.
The men’s eyes turned to Curley’s wife who claimed to be looking for him.
The novelist describes Curley’s wife: « She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavilly made up. (…) Her hair hung in little rolled clusters(…) She wore a cotton house dress and red mules. » Page 32.
About motives
People sometimes adopt behaviours that seem strange to us beforehand because we do not know their motives. Hence, some misunderstandings can lead to undesirable and sometimes tragic consequences. The reader will realize the meaning and importance of this note when we look at what happened to Curley’s wife.
