Cet article a pour objet le roman de Joseph Conrad : The Secret Agent, imprimé en Espagne, 2015, MAXTOR CLASSICS, 307 pages.
Le roman se passe dans les quartiers populaires de la ville de Londres probablement dans les années 1800 (1894) dans un contexte d’anarchisme et d’espionnage. Les personnages du roman sont au nombre de 10 voire un peu plus. Il s’agit de : Winnie et son frère Stevie, leur mère, le mari de Winnie Adolph Verloc plus âgé que son épouse, l’inspecteur en chef Heat et le commissaire adjoint. Les autres personnages sont des anarchistes comme celui qu’on appelle le Professeur, Michaelis, et Ossipon dit le Docteur. Enfin, Vladimir travaille dans une ambassade (le pays est probablement la Russie) et d’autres personnages.
On apprend que la mère de Winnie et Stevie ont emménagé dans la maison d’Adolf Verloc avec son magasin, l’époux de Winnie. Stevie est un jeune garçon un peu particulier, mais il n’est pas fou.Il est seulement très sensible. Il fait face à des situations qu’il estime intolérables à travers des réactions caractérisées notamment par une excitation extrême dans la mesure où il éprouve des difficultés à exprimer normalement ses sentiments. Il a du mal à former des phrases complètes. Il a néanmoins reçu une instruction correcte.
Verloc est à la fois un espion et un membre d’un groupe d’anarchistes. Il affirme néanmoins avoir à cœur la protection des membres de la société et ce, quelle que soit leur classe sociale. Sa femme Winnie, le lecteur doit le savoir, n’a aucune idée de ses activités politiques. Elle connaît ses amis anarchistes mais ignore ses relations avec Vladimir.
Winnie est une femme calme, réservée, sage et ne révèle pas ses sentiments ou ses pensées. Elle s’occupe du magasin, de la maison, protège et aime son frère Stevie et le traite dignement. Ce dernier lui obéit et l’aide quand il est sollicité.
La mère de Winnie et Stevie décide, non sans tristesse de quitter la maison de son beau-fils Verloc pour passer ses derniers jours dans une maison de charité. Elle ne tient pas à constituer une charge supplémentaire pour Verloc. Elle a peur que son beau-fils ne tolère plus la présence de Stevie dans sa maison. C’est une décision qui témoigne de sa préoccupation, voire de son angoisse maternelle. Elle veut préserver la vie conjugale de sa fille Winnie et assurer l’avenir de son fils Stevie.
Description de la scène de départ de la mère de Winnie de Stevie et de leur mère vers son nouveau logement dont on a déjà parlé. Winnie ne semble pas apprécié le fiacre tiré par un cheval en très mauvais état. Le chauffeur de ce taxi s’est indigné, il n’apprécie pas le commentaire sur son moyen de transport. En cours de route, Stevie très indigné, en colère, s’adresse au chauffeur pour lui demander de ne pas fouetter le cheval. Peine perdue. Réaction de Stevie : il descend pour alléger la charge pour le pauvre cheval et se met à courir à côté du fiacre. Winnie et sa mère sont inquiète et la sœur implora son frère de remonter.
L’attelage est enfin arrivé. L’endroit est un peu sombre et l’on voit seulement quelques lumières devant l’entrée de l’immeuble où se trouve l’organisation caritative. Stevie a échangé quelques propos avec le chauffeur qui a parlé notamment de pauvreté, en se plaignant qu’il gagnait difficilement sa vie et qu’il avait à nourrir une famille, sa femme et ses enfants. Stevie a compris à quel point le chauffeur est pauvre et il a répondu par quelques mots par exemple “pauvre pauvre” et ajouté “dur dur”. Ces mots simples expriment la compassion de Stevie. Winnie a payé le prix de la course et le chauffeur, heureux et surpris, empocha les quelques pièces de monnaie en argent. Puis, il conduisit son cheval fatigué et sa voiture plus loin pour trouver un pub.
La mère a demandé à Winnie de voir son fils Stevie une fois par semaine. Cependant, elle craignait que Stevie ne se perde et ne puisse localiser la maison et le magasin. Mais Winnie a dissipé la peur et l’angoisse maternelle.
Les événements qui feront l’objet de la partie 2/3 sont dramatiques. Que s’est-il passé? Comment? Pourquoi?

This article is about Joseph Conrad’s novel: The Secret Agent, printed in Spain, 2015, MAXTOR CLASSICS, 307 pages.
The novel is set in the working-class neighborhoods of the City of London probably in the 1800s (1894) in a context of anarchism and espionage. The characters in the novel are 10 or even a little more. They are: Winnie and her brother Stevie, their mother, Winnie’s husband Adolph Verloc older than his wife, Chief Inspector Heat and Assistant Commissioner. The other characters are anarchists like the one we call the Professor, Michaelis, and Ossipon said the Doctor. Finally, Vladimir works in an embassy (the country is probably Russia) and other characters.
We learn that Winnie’s mother and Stevie have moved into Adolf Verloc’s house with the shop, Winnie’s husband. Stevie is a bit of a peculiar young boy, but he’s not crazy, he’s only very sensitive. His wife Winnie, the reader should know, has no idea of his political activities. She knows his anarchist friends but ignores his relationship with Vladimir.
Winnie is a calm, reserved, wise woman and does not reveal her feelings or thoughts. She looks after the shop, the house, protects and loves her brother Stevie and treats him with dignity. The latter obeys her and helps her when called upon.
The mother of Winnie and Stevie decided, not without sadness, to leave the house of her stepson Verloc to spend her last days in a charity house. She does not wish to constitute an additional burden for Verloc. She is afraid that her stepson will no longer tolerate Stevie’s presence in his house. It is a decision that testifies to her concern, even her maternal anguish. She wants to preserve the married life of her daughter Winnie and secure the future of her son Stevie.
Description of the scene of the departure of Stevie’s mother, Winnie and their mother to her new accommodation which we have already talked about. Winnie does not seem to like the carriage pulled by a horse in very bad condition. The driver of this taxi was indignant, he did not appreciate the commentary on his means of transport. Along the way, a very indignant, angry Stevie addresses the driver to ask him not to whip the horse. Wasted effort. Stevie’s reaction: he gets out to lighten the load for the poor horse and starts running next to the cab. Winnie and her mother are worried and the sister begged her brother to get back on the cab.
The family has finally arrived. The place is a bit dark and you can only see a few lights in front of the entrance to the building where the charity is located. Stevie exchanged a few words with the driver who spoke about poverty, among other things, complaining that he was struggling to make a living and that he had to support a family, his wife and children. Stevie understood how poor the driver is and he responded with a few words like “poor poor” and added “hard hard”. These simple words express Stevie’s compassion. Winnie paid the fare and the driver, happy and surprised, pocketed the few silver coins. Then he drove his tired horse and carriage away to find a pub.
The mother asked Winnie to see her son Stevie once a week. However, she was concerned that Stevie might get lost and be unable to locate the home and store. But Winnie dispelled fear and motherly anguish.
The events that will be the subject of Part 2/3 are dramatic. What happened? How? Why?
