La partie 2/3 sur The Secret Agent de Joseph Conrad se termine par la mort d’une personne à la suite de l’explosion d’une bombe devant l’Observatoire. 

On peut s’attendre à ce que cet acte horrible soit attribué aux anarchistes. L’un de leurs membres compare le capitalisme au cannibalisme et insiste sur l’inefficacité de la propagande. Pourtant, ils sont suivis de près par la police. Qu’en pensez-bous chers lecteurs?

L’inspecteur en chef Heat du département des crimes spéciaux a été mis au courant de cet événement et s’est rendu sur les lieux de l’explosion. Il croise le Professeur qui rentrait chez lui et lui annonce qu’il ne l’arrêtera pas.  Pourrait-il le faire ? Le lecteur sait pourquoi l’inspecteur n’a aucun intérêt à s’approcher trop près du Professeur. Il peut aussi déduire de la présence de l’inspecteur dans cette rue que la police est au courant des activités des anarchistes. 

L’inspecteur en chef déclare que Michaelis est lié à l’affaire d’une manière ou d’une autre.  Il raconta au commissaire adjoint ce qu’il avait découvert sur place et montra un chiffon de drap bleu foncé brûlé.

Ce morceau de tissu portait le numéro 32 et le nom de la rue Brett écrit à l’encre de marquage.  C’est l’adresse du magasin de Verloc.

L’inspecteur informe le commissaire qu’il avait été en contact privé avec Verloc qui était censé l’informer de tout ce qui est important à savoir.  Rappelons que Verloc est un espion d’un gouvernement étranger et qu’il n’avait donné aucune information à l’inspecteur sur la préparation de l’explosion (une quelconque relation de cause à effet?). Verloc était-il au courant et a-t-il laissé tomber l’inspecteur? 

Joseph Conrad s’est inspiré de l’explosion de la bombe que portait l’anarchiste français Martial Bourdin le 15 février 1894. 

C’est Vladimir qui a exigé de Verloc plutôt des actions qu’un rapport en lui suggérant de s’attaquer à un symbole scientifique tel que l’observatoire.  Vladimir a humilié Verloc et menacé de se passer de ses services. On peut se demander toutefois si Verloc n’aurait pas mal interprété les propos de Vladimir. Il en découle, selon le commissaire adjoint, que Verloc s’est senti menacé. Ce dernier s’est servi de son beau-frère Stevie qui a pris l’habitude de l’accompagner dans ses promenades, au grand bonheur de Winnie. Pages 216 et suivantes.  Verloc, selon le commissaire adjoint, n’avait pas prémédité la mort du malheureux garçon. 

Les investigations menées par l’inspecteur en chef Heat l’ont conduit chez Verloc. C’est dans le salon que celui-ci a avoué à l’inspecteur que c’est lui qui a fait porter la bombe à Stevie . Ce dernier a donc dû trébucher, tomber et l’explosion a eu lieu à ce moment-là. Il en est mort. Verloc n’a rien dit à sa femme Winnie mais celle-ci a tout entendu secrètement de la conversation entre l’inspecteur et son époux.

L’inspecteur a quitté le domicile de Verloc lequel a essayé de justifier son acte abominable en affirmant à sa femme qu’il n’était nullement dans son intention de tuer Stevie mais cette justification n’a pas convaincu Winnie qui a décidé de venger son frère en poignardant son mari dans un accès de colère. Elle a quitté la maison alors qu’il faisait nuit et a rencontré Michaelis. 

Le roman se termine par la mort de Winnie dans des circonstances horribles. L’homme qu’elle a rencontré lui avoué son amour et a promis de l’aider. Malheureusement, il l’a abondonnée à son sort quand elle lui a annoncé qu’elle avait tué Verloc, son époux.

يمكن يُتوقع أن يُنسب هذا العمل المروع إلى الفوضويين.  يقارن أحد أعضائهم الرأسمالية بأكل لحوم البشر ويؤكد على عدم فعالية الدعاية.  ومع ذلك ، يتم متابعتهم عن كثب من قبل الشرطة.  ما رأيكم أيها القراء الأعزاء؟

يقدم رئيس المفتشين هيت تقاريره إلى المفوض.  يعتقد أن ميكايليس مسؤول ويؤكد أنه سيجد دليلا. 

يعلن كبير المفتشين أن ميكايليس مرتبط بالمسألة بطريقة ما.  أخبر مساعد المفوض بما اكتشفه على الفور وأظهر قطعة قماش مغطاة باللون الأزرق الداكن.

قطعة القماش هذه تحمل الرقم 32 واسم شارع بريت مكتوبا بالحبر التجاري.  هذا هو عنوان متجر فيرلوك ومنزله. 

أخبره المفتش أنه كان على اتصال خاص مع فيرلوك (Verloc) الذي تم إقناعه لإبلاغ هيت بأي شيء يستحق المعرفة.  دعونا نتذكر أن Verloc هو جاسوس لحكومة أجنبية ولم يقدم أي معلومات حول إعداد التفجير للمفتش هيت (أي علاقة سبب ونتيجة؟).

غادر المفتش منزل Verloc الذي حاول تبرير عمله البغيض من خلال التأكيد لزوجته أنه لم يكن في نيته قتل ستيفي على الإطلاق لكن هذا التبرير لم يقنع ويني التي قررت الانتقام لشقيقها  وفي نوبة من الغضب طعنت. الزوج و غادرت المنزل عندما حل الظلام والتقت  بميكايليس. 

تنتهي الرواية بوفاة ويني في ظروف مروعة.  اعترف لها الرجل الذي التقته به بحبه ووعدها بمساعدتها.  لسوء الحظ ، تركها لمصيرها عندما أعلنت له أنها قتلت زوجها فيرلوك.

Part 2/3 of Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent ends with the death of one person as a result of a bomb explosion in front of the Observatory.

This horrific act can be expected to be attributed to the anarchists.  One of their members compares capitalism to cannibalism and emphasizes the ineffectiveness of propaganda.  However, they are followed closely by the police.  What do you think about it dear readers?

 Chief Inspector Heat of the Special Crimes Department was made aware of the incident and attended the explosion scene.  He runs into the Professor on his way home and announces that he won’t stop him.  Could he!The reader knows why the Inspector has no interest in getting too close to the Professor. You can also deduce from the presence of the inspector in this street that the police are aware of the activities of the anarchists.

 The Chief Inspector says Michaelis is linked to the case in one way or another.  He told the Assistant Commissioner what he had discovered on the spot and showed a rag of burnt dark blue cloth.

 This piece of cloth had the number 32 and the Brett Street name written in branding ink.  This is the address of Verloc’s house. 

 The inspector informed the commissioner that he had been in private contact with Verloc who was supposed to inform him of everything important to know.  Recall that Verloc is a spy for a foreign government and that he had not given any information to the inspector on the preparation of the explosion.  Did Verloc know about this and failed the inspector?

 Joseph Conrad was inspired by the bomb explosion carried by French anarchist Martial Bourdin on February 15, 1894.

 It was Vladimir who demanded action from Verloc rather than a report, suggesting he attack a scientific symbol such as the observatory.  Vladimir humiliated Verloc and threatened to do without his services.  One wonders, however, if Verloc might not have misinterpreted Vladimir’s words.  As a result, according to the Assistant Commissioner, Verloc felt threatened.  The latter made use of his brother-in-law Stevie who took the habit of accompanying him on his walks, much to Winnie’s delight.  Pages 216 and following.  Verloc, according to the the Assistant Commissioner, had not premeditated the death of the unfortunate boy.

 Investigations by Chief Inspector Heat led him to Verloc.  It was in the living room that he confessed to the inspector that it was he who made Stevie take the bomb.  The latter must therefore have tripped, fallen and the explosion took place at that time.  He died of it.  Verloc didn’t say anything to his wife Winnie but she secretly heard everything about the conversation between the inspector and her husband.

 The inspector left the home of Verloc who tried to justify his abominable act by asserting to his wife that he had no intention of killing Stevie but this justification did not convince Winnie who decided to avenge his  brother stabbing her husband in a fit of anger.  She left the house as it was dark and met Michaelis.

 The novel ends with Winnie’s death under horrific circumstances.  The man she met confessed his love to her and promised to help her.  Unfortunately, he abandoned her to her fate when she told him that she had killed her husband Verloc.
