1/Le roman commence par un dialogue entre deux serviteurs un jeune et un autre plus âgé. Soudain, ça sonne et la servante Sarah est appelée auprès de sa maîtresse qui est sur son lit de mort. Le mari de la femme mourante, Treverton, quitte la chambre et laisse entrer Sarah. Dialogue entre la femme mourante et Sarah. La maîtresse demande à sa servante de lui donner des médicaments notamment pour avoir plus de force et s’apprête à lui dicter une lettre destinée à son mari. La servante obéit, mais avec réticence, et rédige la lettre signée par la maîtresse, et selon celle-ci, sa complice c’est-à-dire Sarah. Dans une autre chambre, une petite fille âgée d’environ cinq ans était en train de pleurer amèrement et sa tête était contre la poitrine de son père. Sarah hésite et se demande si elle ne doit pas conserver ou détruire la lettre au lieu de la donner au mari, le Capitaine Treverton. Elle sort par la porte du jardin, prend des clés des salles situées au nord de la maison qui n’ont pas été habitées depuis très longtemps. Il s’agit des Myrtle Rooms. Après avoir caché la lettre dictée par sa maîtresse qui venait de mourir, elle y ajoute quelques lignes pour justifier son acte et son départ et y affirme assumer toutes les conséquences qui en résultent.

2/Les recherches qui ont été lancées par le capitaine Treverton pour retrouver Sarah furent vaines. Celle-ci est introuvable.
L’auteur décrit l’arrivée, secrète et matinale à l’église, du vicaire, d’un jeune homme aveugle, et de la jeune fille maintenant âgée de 20 ans car cette scène commence 15 ans plus tard après la mort de l’épouse du capitaine. Le vicaire regagne son domicile pour prendre son petit déjeuner en présence d’un invité qui est un ami, de ses enfants comprenant trois filles et un garçon et de la gouvernante Mademoiselle Struch.
Le capitaine Treverton vend la maison ( Porthgenna Tower) à son gendre Frankland et a mis les voiles. Mais meurt dans un bateau qui a fait naufrage et laisse un héritage de quarante mille livres à Rosamond.

3/ Rosamond et son mari ont passé leur lune de miel ailleurs puis à Londres dans une maison d’amis. On apprend que Rosamond qui s’occupe bien de son mari aveugle a accouché d’un garçon. Elle a urgemment besoin d’une nourrice et le médecin, Orrigon, qu’elle avait choisi a fini par en trouver une. C’est Mlle Jazeph. Cette infirmière ne paraît pas en bonne santé mais s’occupe bien de Rosamamond. Son comportement paraît néanmoins étrange. Le lecteur n’a aucune idée des émotions qui submergent Mme Jazeph dont le comportement reflète l’épuisement, la fragilité et l’anxiété. Elle a averti Rosamond de ne pas aller à Myrtle Rooms pour son propre bien. Mais Rasamond a pris peur et demandé qu’on éloigne d’elle Mme Jazeph.

The following presentation of the book and the brief comments will be given in two parts. But let me tell you why I chose this novel. First of all, I recently acquired this book and enjoyed reading it, and I really like the literary style of the classical writers, and the plot. Second, I love the setting of the novel and the events that took place in the past and the author accurately portrays the social and cultural aspects of this bygone era.

The novel has its setting in Cornwall and London, as of the first third of the nineteenth century, for the most part, and as the reader knows, the novelist had visited those places in his lifetime which enabled him to enhance the realism of the novel. Cornwall with its fisheries and mines and marvelous landscapes but also with its rules and social classes in the Victorian era.

1/The novel begins with a dialogue between two servants, one young and another older. Suddenly, it rang and the servant Sarah is called to her mistress who is on her deathbed. The dying woman’s husband, Captain Treverton, leaves the room and lets Sarah in. Dialogue between the dying woman and Sarah. The mistress asks her servant to give her some medicine, in particular to have more strength and she is about to dictate a letter to her for her husband. The servant obeyed, but reluctantly, and wrote the letter signed by the mistress, and according to her, her accomplice, that is to say Sarah. In another bedroom, a little girl, about five years old, was crying bitterly and her head was against her father’s chest. The nurse and the doctor are in the mistress’s room. Sarah hesitates and wonders whether she should not keep or destroy the letter instead of giving it to the husband, Captain Treverton. She comes out the garden gate, takes the keys to the rooms to the north of the house that have not been inhabited for a very long time. After having hidden the letter dictated by her mistress who had just died, she adds a few lines to it to justify her act and her departure and affirms to assume all the consequences which result from it.

2/ The search which was launched by Captain Treverton to find Sarah was in vain. This one cannot be found.
The author describes the arrival, secret and early in the church, of the vicar, a young blind man, and of the young girl now aged 20 because this scene begins 15 years later after the death of the captain’s wife. The vicar returns to his home to have breakfast in the presence of a guest who is a friend, his children including three girls and a boy and the housekeeper Miss Struch.

Captain Treverton sold the house (Porthgenna Tower) to Frankland, the father of Rosamond’s husband and set sail. But he died in a shipwrecked boat and left a legacy of forty thousand pounds to Rosamond.

3/Rosamond and her husband spent their honeymoon elsewhere and then in London at a friend’s house. We learn that Rosamond, who takes good care of her blind husband, has given birth to a boy. She urgently needs a nurse and the doctor, Orrigon, whom she chose eventually found one. It’s Mrs Jazeph. This nurse does not appear to be in good health but takes good care of Rosamamond. Her behaviour nevertheless seems strange.
The reader has no idea of what emotions overwhelm Mrs Jazeph whose behaviour reflects her exhaustion, frailty and anxiety.
She warned Rosamond not to go to Myrtle Rooms for her own good. But Rasamond got scared and demanded that Mrs Jazeph be taken away from her.
