My Ántonia a novel published in 1918 by American writer Willa Cather (1873-1947).

It’s Jim who narrates his memories of Ántonia. The novel deals with two friends : a girl Ántonia Shimerda, a Bohemian immigrant, and Jim Burden, her best friend. Jim, an orphaned boy, lives with his parental grandparents. The story has its setting in Nebraska (a midwestern U.S. state), between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, when so many people from Europe started settling there. Átonia Shimerda family is from Bohemia. It’s about how difficult it is to settle as an immigrant, friendship and the countryside life and obstacles that stand in their way. Antonia is Jim’s friend and neighbour. It’s about memories of childhood and how life treated them while they were growing up. Antonia ended up with more than ten children.
Ántonia’s father, an artist, and her mother, like so many immigrants, were dreaming of a better life in the new land with its large prairies. However, Ántonia’s father was unlucky, got depressed and therefore committed suicide.
Life separated them but they found each other again. Obviously, the present does not resemble the past. Jim studied law and became an attorney. Antonia lives with her new husband after being abandoned by the man who promised her marriage but deceived her and she found herself with a child to take care of. However, the memories she shares with her friend Jim are what she treasures most.
