بيكر طوماس Bigger Thomas وأمه وشقيقان ينتمون إلى اسرة فقيرة من الأمريكين السود تسكن في شقة ضيقة يراودها الفئران. والدة بيكر تحثه على البحث عن عمل لوفر لهم سبل العيش ولكن تهاون الإبن يقلقها ويثير هواجسها.
بيكر يتساءل هل يقوم بالسطو على المتجر. إن الفاقة اشتدت بالشبان الأمريكين من الأصول الافريقية ودفعتهم الى السرقة والتي كان السود أنفسهم ضحيتها. الصفحة ٣٦. ثلاث شبان يستعدون للسطو على متجر بلوم من الامريكان البيض ولكنهم عدلوا عن ذلك فيما يبدو.
حصل بيكر على فرصة عمل براتب مناسب كسائق لافراد بيض من اسرة ثرية The Dalton’s تتميز بحسن معاملتها للسود. ولكن بيكر سيهدر الفرصة.
الفتاة ماري، الإبنة الوحيدة لتلك العائلة تثير حيرة وهاجس بيكر طوماس والذي يستعصي عليه فهم طباع ماري.استنتجت من تصرف بيكر ان شخصية ماري تحيره وكأنه يرفض لأسباب غامضة ان تفعل ماري الخير له وتهتم بعنايته.
الصفحة ٢٨. بيكر في وضعية صعبة. لقاؤه بصديق ماري، جان، قد يهدد وظيفته ومستقبله وذلك راجع إلى سياسة التحريض ضد عناصر الحزب الشيوعى آنذاك. يشعر بيكر بارتباك ويتساءل لماذا ماري وجان لا يضعانه وشأنه رغم ان قصدهما حسن. والجدير بالذكر ان ماري وجان يدافعان عن حقوق الاقليات وحاولا عبثا إقناع ليكر بانهما صديقان ولا يريدان به أي ضرر.
بيكر يشعر بالغيض تجاه ماري التي لم تكن لها اي نية سيئة أصلا.
قاد Bigger ماري والتقت بـ Jan. ودعوا Bigger لشرب الكحول معهما وكان الثلاثة في حالة سكر وأعادهم Bigger إلى المنزل. لقد تركا جان ليعود الى بيته بمفرده ودخلا منزل ماري بعد ذلك والظلام يسود المكان.
اقترف Bigger جريمة لن تكن في الحسبان: لقد خنق ماري وزج بها في أتون وهو موقد النار لتدفئة المنزل. وخُيّل إلى أمها، وهي كفيفة البصر، انها تسمع أنين ابنتها قبل ان يقوم القاتل بفعلته.
ص. ٢٠٦-٢٠٧: اكتشاف عظام وأشياء اخرى في الأتون وهي دلائل لا تصب في مصلحة بيكر ويظن ان ليس لها خيار اخر الا الهروب. عندما التقى بصديقته بسي Bessie حكى لها كيف قتل ماري (الصفحة ٢١٣).لم يُجد دفاع ماكس المحامي عن المتهم
فحُكم عليه بالإعدام .

وجهة نظري

لا يملك جل الشباب، اثناء الفترة التي تدور فيها الأحداث، المهارات جراء التهميش والتمييز العنصري ضد السود كما يتبين عبر غضب وسخط بطل الرواية. ولكن الكاتب يعكس الصورة النمطية الخاصة بالسود ويشدد مذلك على طبع ومزاج البطل الذي لا يطاق وغالبا ما يبدو مقززا. والجريمة التي ارتكبتها الشاب تلحق ضررا كبيرا بالأقليات السود التي لم تحقق بعد حلم الحقوق المتساوية. إن اختلاف تكوين الأفكار والتصورات غالبا ما يكون ضحيته السود من الأصول الافريقية.
إني معجب كل الإعجاب بطريقة السرد التي يعتمدها ريتشار رايت في التعبير عن أفعال وسلوكيات الأشخاص.

For an analysis of the Native son in English

Bigger Thomas, his mother and two younger siblings belong to a poor black-American family who live in a cramped apartment infested with mice. Baker’s mother urges him to look for a job to provide them with a means of living, but the son’s negligence worries her and raises her concerns.

Bigger wonders if he’s robbing the store. Poverty intensified young African Americans and drove them to theft, of which the blacks themselves were the victims. Page 36. Three young men are preparing to rob Bloom’s store from white Americans, but they apparently changed their mind.

Bigger got the opportunity to work with a suitable salary as a driver for the white members of a wealthy family, The Dalton’s, distinguished by its good treatment of blacks. But Bigger will miss the opportunity.

Mary, the only daughter of that family, raises the confusion and obsession of Bigger Thomas, who cannot understand Mary’s character. I deduced from Baker’s behaviour that Mary’s personality bewildered him, as if he refused, for mysterious reasons, that she would do him good and take care of him.

Page 28. Bigger is in a difficult position. His meeting with Marie’s friend, Jan, threatened his job and his future, due to the policy of incitement against the elements of the Communist Party at the time. Bigger is flustered and wonders why Mary and Jan can’t leave him alone, even though they meant well. It is worth noting that Mary and Jan defend the rights of minorities and tried in vain to convince Bigger that they are friends and do not want any harm to him.

Bigger feels angry towards Mary, who had no ill intentions in the first place. Mary and her boyfriend Jan invited Bigger to drink with them and the three got drunk and Bigger drove them home. They left Jan for him to go home on his own and then entered Mary’s house in the dark.
Bigger has committed an unthinkable crime: he strangles Mary and throws her into a furnace. And it seemed to her mother, who was blind, that she could hear her daughter’s moaning before the murderer committed his act.
Page 109: Bigger and his perceptions. Page 114: Bigger intends to demand a ransom for Mary’s family and accuse Jan of killing her.
Jan, Bigger, two detectives and Mary’s father are in the house and the detective is inclined to believe that Jan is responsible for Marie’s disappearance.
Pages 206-207: The discovery of bones and other things in the furnace, which are indications that are not in the interest of Baker, and he thinks that he has no choice but to escape. When he meets his girlfriend Bessie he tells her how he killed Mary (Page 213).
A manhunt took place and Bigger was captured. The lawyer Max failed to defend the accused Bigger, so he was sentenced to death.

My point of view
Most of the young people, living in the period in which the events take place, do not have the skills due to marginalization and racial discrimination against blacks, as evidenced by the anger and indignation of the protagonist. But the writer reflects the stereotype of blacks and emphasizes the character and mood of the hero, which is intolerable and often looks disgusting. The crime committed by the young man causes great harm to black minorities who have not yet realized the dream of equal rights. The difference in the formation of ideas and perceptions often harms the blacks of African descent.
I admire the way Richard Wright narrates the actions and behaviours of people.
