يحكي البطل عن مراحل من حياته قضى بعضا منها في وطنه بعد ان اضطر الى مغادرته تحت وطأة أحداث لا طاقة له بها.وفي المرحلة الاخيرة من حياته انتهى به الأمر الى اللجوء السياسي في المملكه المتحده وهناك التقى برجل كان يعرفه أثناء طفولته وهو ويعرف كذلك اهل الطفل. وتم اللقاء لاحقا بعد ان غادر مركز استقبال اللاجئين وبعدما وفرت له راشيل، موظفة في منظمة غير حكومية، شقة تطل على البحر.
البطل مسلم من اصل افريقي كان يعمل كتاجر في قطاع الأثاث المنزلي بعد أن ورث متجر أبيه لبيع الحلوى.
تتشابك القصص التي يتم سردها وتسلط الضوء على عواقب تصرفات وتفاعلات الناس بالناحية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية.
صادر كيفن إيدلمان ، ضابط الهجرة من عمر صالح، علبة تحتوي على العود القمري ، البخور المصنوع من شجرة الصبار. وأثار ذلك ذكريات لقائه مع حسين:

The events are taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland. Timespan of the novel : Tuesday to Friday.
Martin Canning went to Russia for a sightseeing tour and made a Russian girl’s acquaintance who makes a living by selling souvenirs such as Russian dolls and having sexual intercourses when she had the opportunity. He bought dolls in great quantities in order to offer some to his mother. Before the awful event, Martin and a Russian girl went to a bar, got drunk, went to a hotel and end by having sex. She asked for money from him. He hadn’t expected she would ask him to pay her for that. A misunderstanding has led to the deadth of the Russian girl. Martin felt she was growing very threatening so he pushed her and her head hit a piece of furniture. Then he threw the victim’s body out of the window.
I focus on Martin’s character because the author makes him play an important role in the novel. He committed homicide (without premeditation) and this act continues to weigh heavily on his conscience, which he considers his punishment.
He’s not very happy with his family members but his novel has achieved him fame and great deal of money so he bought the house he had dreaming of acquiring. However, does fame and proprety compensate for the sense of failure in other aspects of his life? He accomodated his theatre actor friend, Richard Moat, and the unforeseen and the unexpected event took place in Martin’s house while he was attending , in a hotel room, to the man who was assaulted by the mad driver. A man break in Martin’s house and ruthlessly killed Martin’s guest. The helpless victim begged mercy to no avail. Martin was tending to the wounded driver who left hospital. The cruel man crashed the victim’s skull and left the house.
So a crime was committed in Martin’s house, in his absence. The police then began their investigation while other murders had not yet been elucidated. Detective Jackson Brodie takes part in these investigations when he no longer exercises his previous profession. The members of the police do not show him any sympathy except Margot Monroe although she finds it difficult to believe his information.
Martin was baffled. He was in an unbearable situation because of the crime committed in his house while he was elsewhere. How to convince the police of his innocence? Private detective Jackson Brodie will come to his aid and support him.
It’s as though Louise Monroe’s collegues were bearing grudge against Jackson Brodie. Let’s make the reader remember that the detective was trapped in a spot and met the attacker who severely assaulted the private detective Brody.
Fortunately, the police arrived and saved him from probable death.
There is another character who plays an important role in the circulation of events and is very influential: the Russian Tatina. She was a bank employee in her home country and, like many foreigners, traveled to England to pursue her dreams. It is that she knows Gloria’s rich elderly husband and offers him sexual services for a lot of money without sleeping with him (I referred in the first part to marital infidelity on the part of the rich and old Graham)

For Gloria Hatter, it is an opportunity to take revenge on her husband Graham Hatter for his misdeeds and in particular his infidelity. She withdrew a sum of money each week until she had accumulated about seventy thousand pounds sterling. She knew her husband was going to be investigated for fraud. With the help of Tatiana, who became her friend and adviser, they managed to draw large sums of money from the accounts of the husband whose days are numbered. It took place in a Swiss bank. Obviously, these operations are fraudulent intended to shield the funds from the control of the police and the tax authorities. Not surprisingly, Tatitiana is an expert.
Different, yet converging motivations brought Brodie and Martin to Gloria Hatter’s house in which Tatiana was already. Martin had remained outside the house armed with a pistol. That’s when the one who works for Graham, the husband of Gloria who was dying in the hospital, arrived hoping to find his employer. He was angry, proceeded to break a window and burst into the house. A fight ensued between Brodie and the attacker. Luckily, that’s when Martin came in, saved Brodie from the mugger, and shot the mugger. Tatiana was grateful to Brodie for saving her from the violent man who thought he could do anything. We now know who the murderer of Richard Moat, Martin’s guest. It’s the attacker Terrence Smith, the mad driver.
Society finally got rid of a sociopath member.
Actually Terence Smith killed Richard Moat because he had mistaken him for the witness who had thrown his suitcase over Terence Smith, the mad driver. Moreever, Graham Hatter is the owner of firm cleaning which hire mostly foreigner women to do housecleaning. Those maids have diplomas. Two of them were killed and some were forced into sex traffic. It was Jackson Brodie who had found the floating body of one of those women victims. In talking on the phone to inspector Monroe, Jackson Brodie said:’Trence Smith kilked her on Graham Hatter’s orders.’ Page 512.
To conclude, the novelist, Kate Atkinson, shows the impact of the social environment on attitudes and behaviours. However, we see that the social origin of individuals does not represent an overwhelming obstacle to their social mobility. For example, nothing predisposed Martin Canning to become a famous writer.
The author uses most of the language registers and an interesting style to describe strange scenes, situations, people and events, and the inherent contradictions of life (including everyday life) which makes us continue reading. The writer uses common and formal phrases and words in modern dialogues. She uses all types of irony known in literature and is well acquainted with the great classic British novelists.

About relationships
I’ve read Kate Atkinson’s novel, One Good Turn, twice. What is similar to what is in it is the way in which the narrator talks about characters, events and relationships between characters, for example, the quality of the relationship between, Jackson Brodie, the private investigator, and his girlfriend Julia. Let’s for instance look at this. The two love each other but their behviours and their attitudes are quite contrasted. And so are their opinions and social representations. Were the two of them ill-associated persons?
Here is an excerpt from the novel by Kate Atkinson (page 122). The reader will discover what it is about :
He was about to set off back when his eye was caught by something on the rocks below the remains of a concrete lookout. For a second he thought it was a bundle of clothing that had been dropped there, he hoped it was a bunch of clothing but it didn’t take him more than a skipped heartbeat to know it was a body that had been cast up by the tide.
Sad and strange atmosphere
In the novel prevails, most of the time, a sad and strange atmosphere, as the writer refers to the strangeness of life, death, and the passage of time, which saddens and gives rise to pessimism. This reflects people’s reflections, memories, and feelings. The writer condemns greed and heinous behaviour towards vulnerable animals.
What some characters have gone through
Detective Jackson Brodie comes from a very humble working class background and he has a sad story as he lost his parents. His father was a miner and suffered from the harshness with which British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher dealt with the miners’ strike. He also lost his sister who was raped, killed and thrown into a canal and he finally lost his brother who had committed suicide because he felt responsible for this tragic event. Regarding Julia, her friend, she lost one of her sisters, little Olivia, who completely disappeared one day in the morning.
But just because the rich not only can afford to do everything, including murdering, cheating on their wives and evade taxes, doesn’t mean they can get away with it. There is the law, protection by police forces and, as the author has put it, « cosmic justice ».
Discovery of a corpse
Detective Jackson Brodie was taking advantage of the low tide to walk and he was surprised by the high tide. He then discovered a woman’s body floating. He tried in vain to bring the body back to the shore, but the current carried him further and further. He was eventually saved. At another time, during low tide, he discovered a pile of clothes. Who is the woman?

بيكر يتساءل هل يقوم بالسطو على المتجر. إن الفاقة اشتدت بالشبان الأمريكين من الأصول الافريقية ودفعتهم الى السرقة والتي كان السود أنفسهم ضحيتها. الصفحة ٣٦. ثلاث شبان يستعدون للسطو على متجر بلوم من الامريكان البيض ولكنهم عدلوا عن ذلك فيما يبدو.
حصل بيكر على فرصة عمل براتب مناسب كسائق لافراد بيض من اسرة ثرية The Dalton’s تتميز بحسن معاملتها للسود. ولكن بيكر سيهدر الفرصة.
الفتاة ماري، الإبنة الوحيدة لتلك العائلة تثير حيرة وهاجس بيكر طوماس والذي يستعصي عليه فهم طباع ماري.استنتجت من تصرف بيكر ان شخصية ماري تحيره وكأنه يرفض لأسباب غامضة ان تفعل ماري الخير له وتهتم بعنايته.
الصفحة ٢٨. بيكر في وضعية صعبة. لقاؤه بصديق ماري، جان، قد يهدد وظيفته ومستقبله وذلك راجع إلى سياسة التحريض ضد عناصر الحزب الشيوعى آنذاك. يشعر بيكر بارتباك ويتساءل لماذا ماري وجان لا يضعانه وشأنه رغم ان قصدهما حسن. والجدير بالذكر ان ماري وجان يدافعان عن حقوق الاقليات وحاولا عبثا إقناع ليكر بانهما صديقان ولا يريدان به أي ضرر.
بيكر يشعر بالغيض تجاه ماري التي لم تكن لها اي نية سيئة أصلا.
قاد Bigger ماري والتقت بـ Jan. ودعوا Bigger لشرب الكحول معهما وكان الثلاثة في حالة سكر وأعادهم Bigger إلى المنزل. لقد تركا جان ليعود الى بيته بمفرده ودخلا منزل ماري بعد ذلك والظلام يسود المكان.
اقترف Bigger جريمة لن تكن في الحسبان: لقد خنق ماري وزج بها في أتون وهو موقد النار لتدفئة المنزل. وخُيّل إلى أمها، وهي كفيفة البصر، انها تسمع أنين ابنتها قبل ان يقوم القاتل بفعلته.

وجهة نظري
لا يملك جل الشباب، اثناء الفترة التي تدور فيها الأحداث، المهارات جراء التهميش والتمييز العنصري ضد السود كما يتبين عبر غضب وسخط بطل الرواية. ولكن الكاتب يعكس الصورة النمطية الخاصة بالسود ويشدد مذلك على طبع ومزاج البطل الذي لا يطاق وغالبا ما يبدو مقززا. والجريمة التي ارتكبتها الشاب تلحق ضررا كبيرا بالأقليات السود التي لم تحقق بعد حلم الحقوق المتساوية. إن اختلاف تكوين الأفكار والتصورات غالبا ما يكون ضحيته السود من الأصول الافريقية.
إني معجب كل الإعجاب بطريقة السرد التي يعتمدها ريتشار رايت في التعبير عن أفعال وسلوكيات الأشخاص.

I owe to one of my collegues, English teacher, who lent me the novel «Native Son» by the American author Richard Wright (1908-1960). I read the novel more than ten years ago. Edition in 1966.
The events are taking place in Chicago, USA in the 1930s.
Bigger Thomas, his mother and two younger siblings belong to a poor black-American family who live in a cramped apartment infested with mice. Baker’s mother urges him to look for a job to provide them with a means of living, but the son’s negligence worries her and raises her concerns.
Bigger wonders if he’s robbing the store. Poverty intensified young African Americans and drove them to theft, of which the blacks themselves were the victims. Page 36. Three young men are preparing to rob Bloom’s store from white Americans, but they apparently changed their mind.
Bigger got the opportunity to work with a suitable salary as a driver for the white members of a wealthy family, The Dalton’s, distinguished by its good treatment of blacks. But Bigger will miss the opportunity.
Mary, the only daughter of that family, raises the confusion and obsession of Bigger Thomas, who cannot understand Mary’s character. I deduced from Baker’s behaviour that Mary’s personality bewildered him, as if he refused, for mysterious reasons, that she would do him good and take care of him.
Page 28. Bigger is in a difficult position. His meeting with Marie’s friend, Jan, threatened his job and his future, due to the policy of incitement against the elements of the Communist Party at the time. Bigger is flustered and wonders why Mary and Jan can’t leave him alone, even though they meant well. It is worth noting that Mary and Jan defend the rights of minorities and tried in vain to convince Bigger that they are friends and do not want any harm to him.
Bigger feels angry towards Mary, who had no ill intentions in the first place. Mary and her boyfriend Jan invited Bigger to drink with them and the three got drunk and Bigger drove them home. They left Jan for him to go home on his own and then entered Mary’s house in the dark.
Bigger has committed an unthinkable crime: he strangles Mary and throws her into a furnace. And it seemed to her mother, who was blind, that she could hear her daughter’s moaning before the murderer committed his act.
Page 109: Bigger and his perceptions. Page 114: Bigger intends to demand a ransom for Mary’s family and accuse Jan of killing her.
Jan, Bigger, two detectives and Mary’s father are in the house and the detective is inclined to believe that Jan is responsible for Marie’s disappearance.
Pages 206-207: The discovery of bones and other things in the furnace, which are indications that are not in the interest of Baker, and he thinks that he has no choice but to escape. When he meets his girlfriend Bessie he tells her how he killed Mary (Page 213).
A manhunt took place and Bigger was captured. The lawyer Max failed to defend the accused Bigger, so he was sentenced to death.
My point of view
Most of the young people, living in the period in which the events take place, do not have the skills due to marginalization and racial discrimination against blacks, as evidenced by the anger and indignation of the protagonist. But the writer reflects the stereotype of blacks and emphasizes the character and mood of the hero, which is intolerable and often looks disgusting. The crime committed by the young man causes great harm to black minorities who have not yet realized the dream of equal rights. The difference in the formation of ideas and perceptions often harms the blacks of African descent.
I admire the way Richard Wright narrates the actions and behaviours of people.

The world described by Kate Atkinson in her novel BIG SKY (BLACK SWAN, 2019) is unforgiving and inhabited by characters with repulsive behaviour.
There are also sympathetic and responsible characters in the novel.
In this spy novel by Kate Atkinson, a British novelist, it’s dealt with the system of trafficking in women, in the United Kingdom. It starts with making women of Filipino, Polish and other origins believe that they are going to work in hotels. They are promised jobs in hotels, for example, and they end up in forced prostitution. The greed, the total lack of consideration for women, which have their roots in cruel practices and go back far in time like that of Ancient Rome, all these unspeakable reasons lead to tragedies and suffering of which victims are foreign women. However, young English women have also been victims of sexual abuse and prostitution.
Also Chrystal, Tommy’s wife, and some of her friends, were also sexually abused in their youth. The author even wonders if she had met the one who became her husband afterwards. She is extremely careful of the fragile little girl born of this marriage.
Tommy, Andy, Stephen, and Vince are friends, but it should be noted that Vince is completely ignorant of the nature of the criminal activities carried out by them for a long time. They were practicing, without pity, the criminal acts that we referred to. The villain offenders raised their money thanks to money laundering. They have become big business owners.
It is said that among those to whom horrific service was rendered, the sexually obsessed, in the UK or in Asia are judges, police officers, lawyers and MPs.

Vince’s wife was murdred in mysterious circumstances and two females detectives constables were carrying an investigation in that matter without bullying Vince or constraing him. Did her husband killed her?
We don’t know how Vince went to an abandonned nursing house after horrid scandals took place.
He was carrying a gun when he walked into that place, then he heard moans from nearby, and after a few steps he entered a room. He saw then a horrid scene and later discoved Andy there. He was shocked at the sight, couldn’t stand it and therefore shot Andy. He discovered the victims of the sex trafficking in the rooms he went in.
Investigations by the police and Brodie, the private detective, resulted in the arrest and trial of the evil men. Others died after a long illness without even expressing remorse or regret.
Vince is innocent. His wife was murdered by her lover.
Minutes later, detectives came in including Brodie who was persuading Vince to hand him back the gun but to no avail. One of the Polish victim recognized Steve, grabbed the gun and shot him twice in the back. Regarding Chrystal, she pushed her husband later in the swimming pool and he was drowned for he can’t swim.
It was Steve who was in charge of bringing the foreign women, the candid candidates for the dredful place to deliver them to prostitution.
Families members of sex traffickers had no choice but leave their country. With lot of money.
Kunta et Bell
Je dois rappeler au lecteur que Kunta Kinte a été vendu comme esclave après avoir été enlevé de son village de Juffure (ou Juffureh) en Gambie, un pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest, et emmené en Amérique.
Kunta s’est habitué à sa vie d’esclave. Il va bientôt se marier avec une…esclave. Les choses ne peuvent pas se passer autrement. Voici un passage traduit de l’anglais qui évoque cette union.

Il était plus préoccupé car il restait encore certaines questions importantes dont il désirait discuter avec Bell. Mais il ne pouvait pas, semblait-il, y parvenir. Il s’agissait du fait qu’elle gardait une image encadrée, au mur de son salon, de ‘Jesus’ aux cheveux jaunes lequel on aurait dit un parent de leur Seigneur païen. Mais il a enfin réussi à mentionner cela et Bell lui aussitôt dit qu’il n’y a que deux endroits dans lesquels tout le monde ira, l’enfer ou le paradis, ‘et là où vous irez, c’est votre affaire’. Et elle n’en disait pas davantage. Sa réponse le décontenançait chaque fois qu’il y pensait, et il en vint à décider qu’elle était libre de ses croyances si erronées soient-elles tout comme il avait le droit d’avoir ses propres croyances.
Waller, le maître, ne s’oppose pas à l’idée du mariage
La nouvelle fit rapidement le tour de l’allée des esclaves. Kunta s’est senti gêné par les félicitations pour le mariage. Il aurait pu étrangler Bell d’avoir mis Anne au courant quand celle-ci est venue rendre visite à son oncle. Anne répétait joyeusement « Bell va se marier, Bell va se marier ». Pourtant, dans son fort intérieur, Kunta sentit que c’était déplacé d’éprouver du mécontentement à propos de cette annonce puisque le peuple Mandinka considérait le mariage comme la chose la plus importante après la naissance.
