Je dois rappeler au lecteur que Kunta Kinte a été vendu comme esclave après avoir été enlevé de son village de Juffure (ou Juffureh) en Gambie, un pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest, et emmené en Amérique.

Le projet du mariage

Kunta s’est habitué à sa vie d’esclave. Il va bientôt se marier avec une…esclave. Les choses ne peuvent pas se passer autrement. Voici un passage traduit de l’anglais qui évoque cette union.

Kunta et Bell: les débuts d’une relation…

Il était plus préoccupé car il restait encore certaines questions importantes dont il désirait discuter avec Bell. Mais il ne pouvait pas, semblait-il, y parvenir. Il s’agissait du fait qu’elle gardait une image encadrée, au mur de son salon, de ‘Jesus’ aux cheveux jaunes lequel on aurait dit un parent de leur Seigneur païen. Mais il a enfin réussi à mentionner cela et Bell lui aussitôt dit qu’il n’y a que deux endroits dans lesquels tout le monde ira, l’enfer ou le paradis, ‘et là où vous irez, c’est votre affaire’. Et elle n’en disait pas davantage. Sa réponse le décontenançait chaque fois qu’il y pensait, et il en vint à décider qu’elle était libre de ses croyances si erronées soient-elles tout comme il avait le droit d’avoir ses propres croyances.
Waller, le maître, ne s’oppose pas à l’idée du mariage.
La nouvelle fit rapidement le tour de l’allée des esclaves. Kunta s’est senti gêné par les félicitations pour le mariage. Il aurait pu étrangler Bell d’avoir mis Anne au courant quand celle-ci est venue rendre visite à son oncle. Anne répétait joyeusement « Bell va se marier, Bell va se marier ». Pourtant, dans son fort intérieur, Kunta sentit que c’était déplacé d’éprouver du mécontentement à propos de cette annonce puisque le peuple Mandinka considérait le mariage comme la chose la plus importante après la naissance.

ANSWERS

1/ The cartoon was published on the internet by The Week website. The scene is taking place in a gas station. It shows two men. One of them, on the left, is filling up his car with gas. He wants to know why, the other man who is filling jerrycans with gas, is grinning. On the right, the speech bubble gives an information about the man’s intention. A line chart pasted on the pump shows rising gas prices.

2/ The purpose of the man on right is to take advantage of gas prices increase by reselling the contents of the jerrycans.

3/ I disapprove of the man’s opportunistic behaviour. It doesn’t benefit society and is likely to cause prices to go up. What’s more, it would bring about scarcity and some people might be hurt and worse off. As long as the individuals who behave this way think they can get away with it, they will be willing to do it again if such opportunities arise.
To conclude, self-interest seeking should be avoided for the sake of the whole society and general interest.

Part 3 An American Tragedy

What differences between thoughts and feelings are there? This question is of great importance to Clyde’s matters in so far as he has to deal with two girls, Roberta and Sondra. Moreever, Sondra is very appealing. The trouble is, Roberta loves so much Clyde and needs him as much. Unlike her, Clyde loves too much Sondra and he’s in a pressing need for her money. What use is it to stay with the impecunious and pregnant Roberta? Do love and money blind his reason?
Clyde’s ties to Roberta are diminishing, and his relations with the girl who belongs to a rich family are growing.
Attempts by Clyde and Roberta to solve the problem they are facing or rather she is facing failed. Their efforts were doomed to fail on account of the restrictions (law and social norms) on abortion back then in the USA. Clyde urged Roberta to return home to her parents in the countryside, to be patient until he had saved enough to see her through to the end of the pregnancy. Roberta won’t give up. She insists and sees salvation only in marriage in order to avoid a scandal insofar as the social environment does not tolerate pregnancy outside the legal framework of marriage. But Clyde sees things differently and does not despair of being able to influence the course of events to achieve his dreams. Out of the question for him to compromise his chances of a bright future with Sondra who multiplies the proofs of her romantic attachment despite her mother’s opposition to this project.
On the other hand, Clyde does not respond to the desperate letters that Roberta sends him. He ends up inviting her for a canoe trip on a lake. However, Roberta’s dreams will prove to be totally incompatible with Clyde’s plans. Roberta is happy. Clyde’s dark and cruel ideas are reflected in his looks.
An investigation is launched. Clyde is sentenced to death in the electric chair. Lawyers hired by his uncle failed to save him from this fate. Roberta died by drowning. It was in this cruel way that Clyde got rid of her.
Dreams very often turn into nightmares.

Partie 3 An American Tragedy

Quelles sont les différences entre les pensées et les sentiments ? Cette question est d’une grande importance pour les affaires de Clyde dans la mesure où il doit s’occuper de deux filles, Roberta et Sondra. De plus, elle est très attachante. Le problème est que Roberta aime tellement Clyde et a autant besoin de lui. Contrairement à elle, Clyde aime trop Sondra et il a un besoin urgent de son argent. À quoi cela sert-il de rester avec Roberta, pauvre et enceinte ? L’amour et l’argent aveuglent-ils sa raison ?
Les liens de Clyde avec Roberta s’affaiblissent et ses relations avec, Sondra, la fille issue d’une famille riche, se développent.
Les tentatives faites par Clyde et Roberta pour résoudre le problème auquel ils font face ou plutôt auquel elle fait face échouèrent . Leurs efforts étaient voués à l’échec en raison des restrictions (lois et normes sociales) sur l’avortement à l’époque aux États-Unis. Clyde a incité Roberta à rentrer chez ses parents à la campagne, à faire preuve de patience jusqu’à ce qu’il aura épargné suffisamment pour lui permettre de tenir jusqu’au terme de la grossesse. Mais Roberta n’en démordait pas. Elle insiste et ne voit de salut que dans le mariage afin d’éviter un scandale dans la mesure où le milieu social ne tolère pas de grossesse en dehors du cadre légal du mariage. Mais Clyde voit les choses autrement et ne désespère pas de pouvoir influer sur le cours des événements pour réaliser ses rêves. Hors de question pour lui compromettre ses chances d’un avenir brillant avec Sondra qui multiplie les preuves de son attachement amoureux en dépit de l’opposition de sa mère à ce projet.
Par ailleurs, Clyde ne répond pas aux lettres désespérées que lui envoie Roberta. Il finit par l’inviter pour une sortie en canoë sur un lac. Cependant, les rêves de Roberta vont s’avérer totalement incompatibles avec les desseins de Clyde. Roberta est heureuse. Les idées sombres et cruelles de Clyde se reflètent dans ses regards.
Une enquête est lancée. Clyde est condamné à mort sur la chaise électrique. Les avocats engagés par son oncle n’ont pas réussi à le sauver de ce destin. Roberta est morte par noyade. C’est de cette façon cruelle que Clyde s’est débarrassé d’elle.
Les rêves se transforment très souvent en cauchemars.

Livre 2. Pp. 153-525
Comme nous l’avions vu , le livre 1 se termine par la fuite de Clyde dans une panique totale. Il se retrouve à New York pour le moment. Il réussit à retrouver un de ses amis qui a lui aussi fui. Il a travaillé en tant que chauffeur. Il s’est avisé d’écrire à sa mère en clamant clairement son innocence dans la mort de la petite fille. Sa mère lui suggère de faire connaissance avec son oncle Samuel Griffiths qui possède une entreprise de fabrication de chemises et de cols.
Clyde a rencontré son oncle, le frère de son père, Samuel Griffits. Celui-ci s’aperçoit, au cours de la conversation, que son neveu est ambitieux ce qui l’impressionne et il se montre bien disposé à son égard. L’oncle est richissime et fait partie de la haute société locale. Samuel Griffits a un fils, Gilbert, qui co-dirige l’entreprise paternelle de confection de cols. L’oncle de Clyde a décrit son neveu à son fils, ses filles et sa femme comme étant beau, agréable, bien élevé et ambitieux.
Gilbert recrute, sur l’insistance de son père, son cousin Clyde pour occuper un emploi manuel très pénible. Gilbert n’aime pas son cousin Clyde et le lui montre. Cependant, ni l’attitude de son détestable cousin ni la nature des tâches qu’il occupe ne le découragent. Il est vrai que Clyde a quitté l’école et n’a pas fait de hautes études. Il éprouve néanmoins un double sentiment de soulagement et de fierté car il gagne sa vie et est un membre d’une famille très riche et célèbre. L’auteur décrit admirablement les sentiments de Clyde. L’avenir s’annonce radieux et il n’est pas question d’abandonner ses rêves de promotion sociale.
L’auteur décrit et analyse avec justesse les rêves de Clyde, ses sentiments face à ses réalisations et à quel point atteindre un rang social élevé l’obsède. De façon générale, les personnages du roman sont sondés et leurs portraits sont admirablement présentés. Le thème de la stratification sociale, les classes sociales et les inégalités et les frustrations qui leur sont inhérentes, est récurrent.
Clyde est maintenant bien établi, il commence à se familiariser petit à petit avec le nouveau contexte et fait connaissance avec la famille de son oncle, ses cousines et d’autres personnes. Il va commencer de nouvelles aventures qui vont être lourdes de conséquences pour lui. Son oncle Samuel Griffiths affiche une réelle solidarité envers lui et lui fait offrir un poste de responsabilité. Sous ses ordres, il n’a que des femmes. Il ne tarde pas à faire connaissance avec une jolie et jeune ouvrière, Roberta, d’un milieu rural pauvre, dont il tombe amoureux et entretient des rapports plus intimes avec elle. Quelque temps après, elle lui apprend qu’elle est tombée enceinte. Grande panique.
Il n’est pas prêt à avoir des enfants. Pouvez-vous deviner comment Clyde va faire face à ce problème ? On dirait qu’il est en difficulté.

Part two of the summary
Book 2. Pp. 153-525

Clyde is now well settled , he begins to get familiar little by little with the new context and gets to know his uncle’s family, his cousins and other people. He will begin new adventures which will have serious consequences for him. His uncle shows real solidarity with him and offers him a supervisory position in a department in which he has only women under his orders. However, it should be emphasized that his cousin Gilbert made it clear to him that it was totally forbidden to have relations other than professional with the female staff and that any temptation had to be resisted, in order not to call into question the reputation of the company and that of its owner, the Griffits family. Clyde observed the rules but only for a while. And because of his loneliness, his frustrations, he soon met a pretty and young worker, Roberta, with whom he fell in love and maintained a more intimate relationship with her. One day she told him that she had got pregnant. Great panic.
He’s not ready to have children. Can you hazard a guess as to how Clyde is going to sort out this problem? It seems like he’s in trouble.
